In late June 2025, the Mthatha region in the Eastern Cape experienced a devastating flood, severely impacting the Slovo area near the Mthatha Dam.

Over 103 lives were lost, and entire families were displaced. The affected communities, including informal settlements and areas where SOS Children's Villages South Africa operates, are among the most vulnerable in the region.
