SOS Children’s Villages SA and HSBC partner to innovate child-care and empower youth

For more than 15 years, HSBC has been in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages South Africa (first with their Future First and then Youth Opportunities programmes), supporting young people with access to education and life-skills, as well as at building sustainable futures.

In 2019, HSBC South Africa donated over One Million Rands, to pay the tuition fees of tertiary students at SOS SA. The aim of this grant is to develop the youth, to accelerate their education, development, sustainability and ultimate independence. More than 80 tertiary students from SOS SA will benefit from these bursaries to cover registration and tuition fees in 2020. This helps SAs most marginalised young people develop the necessary skills that will make them more employable.

A supportive family is the best environment for a child to grow. If a child is loved, respected and secure then they have an opportunity to thrive and this is proven by research. This is the mission at SOS SA, that all children belong to a family where they are loved, respected and secure. It is only made possible with the help of supporters and donors such as HSBC. Without HSBC, the reality is that many youths may never have been able to complete their studies, or realise their dreams.

HSBC has also donated 110 new laptops and monitors to SOS Children’s Villages South Africa.

The 110 laptops and monitors were distributed to the 11 SOS programmes across the country. They will be used for SOS’ digital village programme, which aims to bridge the digital divide, tackle social ills through technology, and make information readily accessible to the children and youth. This initiative also seeks to improve literacy skills, develop digital skills and improve the youth’s employability. SOS Children’s Villages IT team further offers to the children and youth cyber security training to raise awareness about data protection, cyberbullying and social media.

HSBC is supportive of social and economic transformation in South Africa, it wishes to develop SOS Children’s Villages South Africa in order to assist in and accelerate the education, sustainability and ultimate financial and operational independence of the organisation.

This partnership talks to SOS’ 2030 vision, to simplify the organisation, to innovate child-care and to empower young people.
