A village with vision

Long before the lockdown caused a sudden move to online learning, SOS realised that we needed to take urgent steps to improve digital literacy in our villages.

And so in 2017, The Digital Village was born: a project to establish information and communication technologies (ICT) like computers and internet; and improve digital skills and ‘cyber smarts’.

The project kicked off in the Rustenburg and Pietermaritzburg villages. We were thrilled earlier this year when HSBC Bank donated 110 new laptops and sponsored the tertiary tuition fees of 80 SOS students. Then in August, a generous donation provided ICT infrastructure at SOS Mamelodi.

HSBC staff also embarked on a digital volunteering campaign, to improve employability skills for the older children, and literacy for the younger ones. Thank you HSBC for your visionary support. Crossing the digital divide is no longer an impossible dream.
