BRICS Skills Expo

Hi everyone,

This week, hundreds of children from our SOS Mamelodi and Ennerdale programmes attended the BRICS Skills Expo to learn about the‘ jobs of tomorrow’. It all took place in a massive, brightly lit hall, buzzing with activity.

Basically it was all about the 4th Industrial and so there were companies from the BRICS showcasing new developments in fields like cyber security, data analytics and industrial robotics. And then there were lots of children asking questions, and learning how to get involved. A real high-tech-meets-inquisitive-minds type of thing.

Interestingly, this BRICS Expo coincides with the Jobs that is taking place this week too. The Jobs Summit is all about getting more people employed, especially young people. The question is whether South Africa can participate in the 4th Industrial Revolution, while still creating enough jobs to reduce unemployment. Are our children being adequately prepared for these high-skilled jobs of the future?

It’s going to take a huge effort by everyone in South Africa, including SOS Children’s Villages. Yes, we have a role to play too! So the seed has been planted. And now we need to work with our partners to help these children access the industry, and be a part of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Connected to this, at SOS CV we are spending most of this week refining our 2019 annual plans…and one of the key focus areas here is Youth Empowerment. Next year, we will build our own capacity, and forge new partnerships to better prepare children for the future world of work.
